Salmon Ball

One of our family Christmas traditions is a trim the tree party with a dinner buffet. We spend much of the day getting out the Christmas decorations, Christmas tree ornaments and of course, the tree. The older children and grandchildren who live in the area come for the buffet dinner and afterwards the tree is decorated. Our buffet consists of meats and cheeses to make your own sandwich, shrimp, herring, Christmas cookies and spiced tea just to hit the highlights!

As part of the dinner buffet, I always make a salmon ball – year after year. It is one of those appetizers that never grows old. Not only is it extremely easy to make but it looks as though you spent much more time on it than you did!

As you know, if you have been reading for awhile, I have been trying to incorporate more fish into our diet. After all, fish is brain food and contains lots protein, vitamins B, D and omega 3 fatty acids – it is a nutritional powerhouse! So, this is one recipe that I might just have to stop saving for the holiday season and begin serving more than often.

Salmon Ball


  • 1 (14.75 oz) can salmon – wild caught (where to buy)
  • 1 (8oz) package of cream cheese
  • 1/4 tsp salt (where to buy REAL salt)
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. horseradish
  • 1/2 c chopped nuts (or parsley)


Drain the salmon and separate the bones.

Mix all ingredients together.

Shape into a ball.

Roll in chopped nuts (I use pecans) or chopped parsley.

Serve with crackers

    What a great find for me! Raine Saunders (Agriculture Society) posted a link from Weed ’em and Reap where I found a link to your blog. I am always on the lookout for new ways to use salmon, not because I’m trying to incorporate more seafood into our diet but because we have a freezer FULL of salmon every year and I want to make sure we eat ALL of it before the next fishing season!
    I just have to say though: leave those bones in girl! They are soft and easily smooshed with a fork, barely noticeable in the finished product and loaded with minerals, definitely worth getting over any initial squeamishness for.

    we add a dash or two of liquid smoke also….just adds to the flavor…also we substitute tuna for the salmon….
