I have to say that our last week of 2015 was a total blast – literally!
I know, if you look at the snow covered vineyard pictures above and below, it is beautiful. And, it was …. after the blizzard was over!
I’m talking a sustained wind blast of 35 – 40 mph blowing snow all around west Texas – for 48 hours!
Yes, surviving our first blizzard was an experience and once is definitely enough!
Maybe you saw the news reports? I didn’t but, I understand that Lubbock made national news with the mayor declaring a state of emergency. we were not in a state of emergency – the pantry was well stocked, the wood burning stove was putting out the heat but, we did have 4 – 5 foot snow drifts around the house and in the vineyard.
The beauty of living in the middle of nowhere, down a dirt road is the blessing of staying home. I don’t even try to maneuver our road in a soaking rain much less snow drifts of 4 – 5 feet!
I have been assured by the men in the family that they will rescue me – after all, we have a tractor that is totally capable of pulling the car or van out of whatever I am stuck in!
Well, um, let’s see … I prefer to stay safe and toasty warm inside our house … thank you very much!
OK, I did venture out to see the snowman.
And, to watch the snowball fights – making sure that no one saw me lest I become a target!
The drifts did make great walls to hide behind!
One effect of the blizzard we noticed was spotty internet. We noticed it but attributed it to the weather conditions – until, we had been completely unplugged for a couple of days. Then, John found that the blizzard caused snow to be blown into the connection box for the wireless internet which is up on the roof. The snow melted, refroze and corroded the connections.
I really can’t explain it any better than that – techie stuff is not my forte! The bottom line was – we had no internet!
As you have probably already guessed, we are reconnected, otherwise, I would not be able to explain where I have been!
Our children had a taste of what life was like years ago without the internet, Netflix and even our telephone which is VoIP (voice over internet). I do have a cellphone, just not a smartphone, so we were not totally disconnected!
We actually had a lot of family fun time and I was to spend time working on our yearly budget. I have been going through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University with a friend and am excited to implement what I have learned.
I don’t know about you but, I love the start of a new year with all the excitement of what is to come! I love re-evaluating, re-committing to previous goals and even setting new goals. My goals for this year include :
- Daily Bible Reading – I have enjoyed reading through the Bible in a Year in previous years and look forward to doing it again this year. I like to use the plan from In Touch Ministries – click on “Daily Devotion” and at the bottom of the devotion is the Bible in One Year reading.
- Home Education – With all areas of my life, I feel that the start of a new year is a new beginning and home education is no exception. I am always refreshed after the holiday season to “hit the books” with renewed excitement!
- Exercise – My goal is to exercise 5 – 6 times per week. I have a mini trampoline that I enjoy jogging on which is good for the adrenal system. I have also started 30 Day Fitness Challenges and am currently doing the Squat and the LBD Dress challenges. These challenges are great workouts but do not take a lot of time.
- Budget – As I mentioned earlier, I have being going through Financial Peace University. So, I have been inspired to take a closer look at our budget and make some adjustments that I think will be more effective. I have always kept a budget book to track our (my) spending but I am trying the zero based budget for a few months. A zero based budget assigns every dollar a name at the beginning of the month so I am telling our money where to go rather than just watching to see where it goes! I’ll keep you posted and let you know if it works!
I would love to hear about your goals for the new year – leave a comment!
