Essential oils are part of our family’s healthy life. The more I learn, the more I am convinced that a healthy life is multifaceted. There are many factors that all work together to make a person healthy. So, instead of “healthy life”, maybe I should say, “healthy lifestyle”! Let’s try this again – I use essential oils as part of our family’s healthy lifestyle!
Essential Oils and the 6 Foundations to Health
“Lifestyle” by definition according to Merriam Webster is
a particular way of living : the way a person lives or a group of people live
From the definition, it encompasses the whole of a person’s or peoples’ way of living. A healthy lifestyle is more than just a diet, or an exercise program – it is a way of life!
There are 6 foundations to health for everyone:
1. Healthy Diet
3. Rest and Stress Reduction/Management
4. Reduce Toxins
5. Informed Self-care
6. Proactive Medical Care
You can use essential oils in all six areas listed above and especially in informed self-care and proactive medical care. That is the beauty of essential oils – they support every system in your body. They help your body work in harmony at the maximum capacity it was designed for!
How I Use Essential Oils
When I began to use essential oils, I admit, it took re-training to reach for oils first. And, to take the time to research which would be the best to use of the oils I had on hand. But, that is another beauty of essential oils! Because of their complex chemical structure, one oil has many beneficial qualities. That means you don’t have to have each and every oil available! Then again, who doesn’t want EVERY oil?
Here are the 3 ways I use essential oils:
Topically is one of the fastest ways to gain benefits from essential oils. Your skin is the largest organ of your body! So, whatever you use on your skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream faster than the food you eat!
That makes topical application of essential oils an easy go-to when you are looking for natural solutions. Muscle tension, occasional aches and pains, emotional stress, hormonal imbalance – there are essential oils that help support your body through each of these!
Topical application is as easy as rubbing a drop on the area of concern, wrists, pulse points, back of neck or feet.
Even our seven year old knows that Lavender will soothe the irritation caused by the bee sting she just received! I love it when she comes in asking for it! Or, when one of the children ask for Peppermint. They know that a drop rubbed on their tummy soothes occasional stomach discomfort!
Aromatic or smelling the scent of essential oils can have an amazing effect on your body and your mood. This can be as easy as opening a bottle of essential oil and taking a whiff. Or, placing a drop of oil in your hand, cupping it to your nose and inhaling Or, using a diffuser to put the aroma (and the beneficial properties) of the essential oils into the air.
Diffusing is one of my favorite ways to use essential oils. Diffusing not supports your body systems and affects the mood of your family, it also makes your home smell wonderful! Diffusing can also help purify the air in your environment. This is really important during certain times of the year when seasonal threats are at their highest.
I know there is a lot of controversy about the internal usage of essential oils. But, our family has gained many benefits from using them internally. Certain essential oils are considered safe for internal use by the FDA. The bottle is clearly labelled and the supplemental facts are given.
It is very easy to make your own blends using empty veggie capsules and they are easy to swallow. This is a great way to target areas of concern. It also helps support your body’s systems in the day to day fight against environmental threats our bodies face.
Adding a drop of essential oil to your glass of water (or other beverage) not only adds flavor (think grapefruit, lemon, lime) but also health benefits. For example, a drop of lemon naturally cleanses the body and aids digestion.
I love the feeling of empowerment that comes with the knowledge I have gained from learning about essential oils. It has also given me the ability to make informed self-care and be proactive when it comes to our family’s health!
