Are you looking for ideas and tips for dresser organization? I always am! Especially since space is limited while we finish our house overlooking the vineyard!
Tips for Dresser Organization
Here are my tips for dresser organization complete with makeup and hair accessories sorted neatly. It is amazing how this increases the pleasure of getting dressed each morning.
1. Get Rid of Old or Unused Items
Probably the easiest dresser organization tip with the most immediate results is to de-clutter. Go through everything that is on your dresser and in the drawers.
Just as in How to Organize a Closet, purge items that are not used, rarely used or broken. Throw away, giveaway or sell, but get rid them. They complicate your life, take up space and prevent you from having an organized dresser.
If you have hair accessories that are no longer used, pony tail holders that are stretched or makeup bought on a whim and not used – get rid of them.
For clothes you have not worn in a year, chances are, you will not wear them again – get rid of them.
Work through each drawer purging unused items. Make 3 piles of the contents sorting them – keep, giveaway, throw away. Then, with what you intend to keep, move to step 2.
2. Put Like Items Together
Once you have sorted the contents of your dresser, put like items together in one drawer. For example: Underwear goes in the top drawer. Knit t-shirts go in the second drawer. Shorts go in the third drawer. And so on..
Drawers can be organized in any way that works for you but, I find that having like items together saves time and energy.
Roll or fold? This is completely up to you. I do a combination. Rolling does take a bit more time but the advantage is easily being able to see what you have rather than stacks of folded clothing.
3. Decide on Storage Options
I use a basket that sits on my dresser to hold my makeup, lotions and hair accessories. In the basket, I have small plastic divider trays to keep like items together. I also have a small mason jar which holds my makeup brushes.
You may choose to use drawer dividers or trays in dresser drawers to keep everything sorted neatly and easy to find.
Smaller items can be grouped together and divided trays can be used to hold small jewelry as well.
4. Add Wall Hooks
Decorative wall hooks or doorknobs hung together can be used to hang necklaces.
I found an attractive decorative iron piece that hangs from the ceiling in the girl’s room. They hang necklaces, scarves and belts from it.
These easy to add hooks and hangers, work to keep items that tend to migrate to dresser tops, organized and your dresser clutter free.
5. Use a Framed Screen
For earrings, hanging a decoratively framed screen works well to keep pairs of earrings from cluttering your dresser. Once hung, simply hook your earrings through the screen. They are out of the way and easy to see and make your selection.
I found a small window screen at a home improvement store and painted it. Hobby Lobby also has options – remember to use the 40% off coupon!
6. Use a Makeup Organizer
I have my makeup in a decorative basket (see #3). As with the organizers mentioned above, everything is seen easily, is organized in one place and is easily accessible.
Make Your Mornings and Your Life Easier!
Dresser organization does take a bit of time in the beginning but, believe me, it is time well spent. Not only does getting rid of unused items de-clutter and simplify your life, it gives an inner piece that makes life easier.
With items organized, they are easy to find and since everything now has its own place, you are less likely to misplace and lose your treasures.
