Gift Solutions: Choosing the Right Bottle of Wine as a Present
Christmas, birthdays or as a housewarming present, there’s really no occasion when a nice bottle of wine doesn’t make an ideal gift. Choosing the right type of wine might be a trickier proposition depending on the recipient but, stick with these buying tips to make the task a little easier.Choosing your wine gifts should be quite straightforward but remember that the most expensive bottle isn’t necessarily the right choice.
What’s the occasion?
The reason for the gift-giving can make a difference to the wine you choose. For example, an expensive bottle of champagne will be appreciated as an engagement, christening or birthday gift or even as a present for a loved one at Christmas. There’s never really an excuse to go for that budget-priced bottle no matter how nice the label looks. Mid-priced bottles are usually the safest bet when choosing a nice rioja or Chablis and you can usually find the more expensive varieties with half-price discounts during special store promotions.
Consider your friend’s taste
It shouldn’t really have to be said but giving a wine that your friend will appreciate is preferable to just picking the first price-suitable bottle from the shelf. Taking the time to find out the type of wine your gift recipient prefers means you’re more likely to receive an appreciative thank you. By the same token don’t go all out to impress with an overly expensive bottle of Haut-Brion, if you can find a bottle that is. If the person you’re going to be giving to has a favorite chardonnay or Merlot then stick to that and you won’t go wrong.
Always ask your wine merchant
Most people don’t have a personal wine merchant but if you visit a specialty wine store you will find knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. They will be more than happy to provide information on the range of wines they sell, which means you can look like a knowledgeable wine buff when you hand over your present. Your local wine merchant will know a lot more than just red or white and will be able to inform you on the growing regions of particular countries and of course which years yielded the best wines for specific producers. You should also be able to obtain information such as which wines compliment specific foods and they’ll be able to find a good bottle to meet your budget.Remember that your wine merchant will be able to advise on some little under-rated gems or even obscure varieties that will impress. Don’t forget that at Christmas, a bottle of red wine combined with port makes a great gift for those lovers of mulled-wine.Sources – telegraph.co.uk
