Tiramisu has to be one of my favorite dessert of all times! Smooth, soft and sweet! Therefore, I have to say, Tiramisu is probably best described as a taste of heaven on earth!

During our travels throughout Italy, tiramisu was always my dessert of choice! Most of all, I enjoyed trying the local version of the popular dessert. And, I must say, a few tasted like the frozen versions sold in the local grocery store. Again, nothing beats the homemade version!

When we lived in Switzerland, John worked with a woman whose husband was Italian. Discovering my love of tirmaisu, she brought a dish of the delightful dessert to work for John to bring home to me.

Needless to say, it was love at first bite - not just for me but for the whole family! The challenge was translating the Italian recipe from her mother-in-law into English! Thankfully, my German tutor was also fluent in Italian! As a result, the following recipe is the translated version of the original, authentic Italian tiramisu recipe and boy, is it good!

When possible, I use homemade cream cheese from my Simple Cheesemaking book. I know there is controversy about whether or not cream cheese can make a good tiramisu. But, it can be difficult to find mascarpone.

Since mascarpone is not available in my area, I have found that cream cheese yields a delicious dessert when used in this recipe.

Now, you may be worried that tiramisu is not the most healthy dessert. While that may be true, we do eat healthy most of the time therefore, I don't worry about it! This falls into the 20% of the 80/20 rule. And, I allow this indulgence  ;)

Easy Tiramisu Recipe Step by Step

First of all, mix together the espresso, 1 tablespoon sugar, Amaretto and Cointreau - set aside and allow to cool completely. Photo 1
In mixing bowl, add the egg yolks and ¼ c sugar. Mix well - it will be a pale yellow color. Photo 2 - 3
Mix together mascarpone (or cream cheese) and grated lemon peel. Photo 4
Beat egg whites until stiff. Photo 5
Fold the egg whites into the mascarpone mixture. Photo 6

In a deep dish, place a layer of lady fingers in the bottom. Photo 7
Spoon the coffee mixture (that is completely cooled from above step 1) over the lady fingers to saturate them.  Don't worry if it pools, the lady fingers will absorb the coffee and be delicious! Photo 8
Cover with the marscapone or cream cheese mixture on top Photo 9
Continue the layers ending with the mascarpone (or cream cheese) mixture. Photo 10 - 11
Sprinkle with cocoa and refrigerate overnight. I like to add a bit more cocoa before serving! Photo 12

Tips For Making This Easy Tiramisu Recipe

The recipe for homemade lady fingers follows this Easy Tiramisu recipe. I use sprouted flour or almond flour from my affiliate partners (where to buy sprouted flour) / (where to buy almond flour) for the homemade lady fingers. While they are not as light as the store bought version, they are more healthy.

    Extra Tips:

    • You can swap the liqueurs I've used in this recipe for marsala, coffee liqueur or brandy
    • Try sprinkling some grated dark chocolate on top
    • You can use store bought lady fingers if short on time (but remember the health benefits of making homemade)
